Yasha vs Semrush: AI Visibility vs Search Rank — Which Do You Actually Need?

Semrush tracks your Google rank. Yasha tracks whether AI answers mention your brand at all. They solve different problems. Here's how to think about which one matters for your business.

This comes up constantly in calls: "We already use Semrush. Why would we need Yasha?"

The short answer: Semrush tells you where you rank in Google's list of URLs. Yasha tells you whether AI systems name your brand when buyers ask the questions you care about.

Those are different surfaces, different signals, and increasingly different buyers.

What Semrush measures

Semrush is a search intelligence platform. Its core value is:

  • Keyword ranking positions (where your pages appear in Google's organic results)
  • Backlink profiles
  • Competitor keyword gaps
  • Technical site audits
  • Paid search intelligence

It's built for the world where buyers open Google, type a query, and click one of the first ten blue links. That world still exists and still sends traffic. Semrush is excellent at measuring it.

What Yasha measures

Yasha measures AI visibility — specifically, whether your brand is mentioned by name in the generated responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini.

When someone asks Perplexity "best tools for tracking AI brand mentions," it doesn't return a ranked list of URLs. It writes a paragraph. That paragraph will name two or three products. Whether your brand is one of them is what Yasha measures.

The core metrics:

  • Mention rate — % of relevant queries where your brand is named
  • Share of voice — your mention rate vs. Semrush, Profound.io, Otterly.ai, BrightEdge
  • Average AI rank — where in the response your brand appears (first mention vs. last)
  • Citation count — how often AI systems link to your site as a source

Yasha runs these probes weekly, across 4 AI engines, on the specific queries your buyers use.

The overlap — and the gap

There's meaningful overlap: Perplexity pulls from Google's index, so a page that ranks well on Google often gets cited by Perplexity. If you're doing SEO well with Semrush, you're building the foundation.

But the gap is real:

Semrush can show you rank position 1 while Yasha shows 0% mention rate in AI. This happens when your page ranks well for a keyword but AI systems don't cite it — because the content isn't structured in a way AI engines extract well, or because a competitor has better citation patterns elsewhere.

Semrush doesn't tell you what GPT-4o says about your brand. When a prospect asks ChatGPT "compare Semrush alternatives for small agencies," ChatGPT names products from its training data and browsing — not from a rank list. That's invisible to Semrush.

Semrush doesn't measure share of voice against AI-native competitors. If you're competing with Profound.io or Otterly.ai, their AI visibility — how often they're named in relevant queries — matters more than their domain authority.

Which one do you need?

You need Semrush if: Your buyers primarily find you through Google search, your acquisition is heavily SEO-driven, and you're in a mature enough category that Google ranks are contested and meaningful.

You need Yasha if: Your buyers are asking AI assistants before they open a browser (true for most B2B categories now), you want to understand whether your brand is being recommended by AI, or you're building in a newer category where AI is the discovery surface.

You likely need both if: You're managing an agency with multiple client brands, you care about both search and AI visibility, and you want a single dashboard for both surfaces.

The honest take

Semrush is the right tool for search. It's been built over 15 years for exactly that. If your marketing is primarily search-driven, you should use it.

Yasha is built for a different question: what do AI systems say about my brand, and how do I change it?

If you've never measured your AI visibility, the answer is almost certainly 0% — even if your SEO is excellent. That's the gap Yasha is designed to close.
